Tomorrow is National Donut Day! This sweet day is always celebrated on the first Friday of June. It honors The Salvation Army's Donut Lassies — a group of women volunteers who baked and delivered doughnuts to soldiers on the front lines during World War I — and was first celebrated in 1938 in Chicago.
Content Studios Omaha managing editor Daisy Hutzell-Rodman wrote the following web post for The Salvation Army of Omaha about the history of the event. The organization celebrated the day earlier this week in order to provide thousands of sugary treats to veterans and other community members.
Several places are offering deals on doughnuts around the metro. Here are a few that we know of: LeMars Donuts and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are offering a free doughnut, Dunkin' Donuts is offering a free doughnut with the purchase of a drink, Hurts Donuts is donating a portion of their proceeds to a military charity, and Casey's is offering a free doughnut to rewards members. Other stores not listed may also be participating.
