“If you’re the last person on earth, you don’t need to prearrange,” remarks Jon Roeder. “Pre-planning is something you do for the family you leave behind.”

He emphasizes the importance of sharing information with family members before a death occurs. Equally important is choosing a mortuary that is owned and operated by compassionate people who have lots of experience helping families deal with the loss of a loved one. Jon and his son, Brian, are the third and fourth generations to operate Roeder Mortuary, which has been family-owned and operated since it was founded in 1912. Today there are three locations in the Omaha area: on 108th Street and West  Maple Road, 49th Street and Ames Avenue, and in Gretna. Roeder’s offers traditional burial as well as cremation. If people choose cremation, this decision brings additional choices such as whether to have a visitation and what to do with the ashes. Pre-planning booklets are available at all three locations and can be requested online. Roeder’s website also provides a list of steps to take if a death occurs at home.
