Thursday, March 14: Charles C. Mann is a journalist and author who often specializes in science-based stories. But he is perhaps best known for his book, 1491, which combines science, history, and archaeology to help readers better understand the Americas before the arrival of Columbus. At An Evening with Charles C. Mann: The Wizard and the Prophet at the UNO Thompson Center, Man will discuss his latest work, which examines the wide-ranging influence of two little-known twentieth-century scientists, Norman Borlaug and William Vogt. Friday, March 15 to Sunday, March 17: The 64th Annual O’Reilly Auto Parts World of Wheels is back and they brought the big guns. Celebrities this year include NASCAR driver Tony Stewart, WWE Superstar Becky Lynch, and John Schneider, aka Bo Duke from the original Dukes of Hazzard. There’s a pedal car challenge, a pinup girl contest, chop shop demos featuring legendary custom car builder Gene Winfield. Saturday, March 16: The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade marches on, despite having to be postponed from last week. As they wind through the Old Market, starting on 15th and Harney streets, The Ancient Order of Hibernians bring the Irish spirit to downtown Omaha, as they’ve been doing for over five decades. The official AOH Post Parade party will (still) be at Annie’s Irish Pub in Capitol District, so if you haven’t checked it out yet, now is the perfect opportunity to experience this up-and-coming area, which has its own all-day celebration going on. Saturday, March 16: You will find nearly 100 zine creators from the Midwest and beyond at Omaha Zine Fest 2019 this Saturday at The Union for Contemporary Art. This is a fun, free, family-friendly event that’s open to everyone. Besides being able to browse unique, original work from innovative creatives, you can participate in workshops, listen to tutorials, and do a little creating yourself, should the mood strike. Food will also be readily available, thanks to food trucks Fauxmaha Hot Dogs and A Taste of New Orleans, plus the Girls Scouts of America pushing their addictive wares near the check-in table (you have been warned!). Sunday, March 17: St. Patrick’s Day this year brings you all the usual suspects—Irish bars serving up Guinness, Jameson, and corned beef (while it lasts). Below is a list of some staples, with a few wild cards thrown in.
- Clancy’s Pub, in collaboration with Office West, offers a full day of live music, green beer, and free green bagels and doughnuts (while they last!).
- St. Paddy’s at The Down Under has a tent party going on during the day, with live music, tailgating games, and free Irish stew.
- The Dubliner Pub will have music from Connor Dowling and Dicey Riley going throughout the day.
- Maloney’s Irish Pub—where all day-drinking should start.
- St. Paddy’s at The Nifty Bar is serving up Irish stew and shenanigans (aka games).
- Have some Irish potato soup while listening to music from Peter Brennan & Friends at Paddy McGown’s.
- The Sheelytown Boys Irish Band are bringing the Irish to Scriptown Brewing Company.
- Sullivan’s Bar has shot specials going all day, including their Sully Shooters and Irish Car Bombs.
- At the Tangier Shrine Annual St. Patrick’s Day Feed, you’ll get the full-on Irish dinner experience—dine-in or drive-thru!
- The Shenanigans and Lemon Fresh Day are playing at the grand reopening of Two Fine Irishmen.
- The Annual Ralston St. Patrick’s Trolley Crawl is a safer way to hit all the Irish hotspots in Ralston—The Village Bar, Scorz, Ralston Keno, and of course, Molly’s Pub.
