The Nature Conservancy has nature trails at the Platte River Prairies and their Niobrara Valley Preserve. The Platte River Prairies has a great diversity of plants and a host of animal species. TNC’s Niobrara Valley Preserve encompasses 56,000 acres of canyons, grasslands, and a 25-mile stretch of the Niobrara River. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the preserve year-round, and of special interest is the bison herd grazing in the vast open prairie.
The Nature Conservancy’s vision is a world where the diversity of life thrives, and people act to conserve nature for its own sake and its ability to fulfill our needs and enrich our lives. Action is rooted in good science. Staff biologists develop and champion new ideas and innovations—and execute time-tested conservation practices—across Nebraska.
TNC partners with farmers, ranchers, landowners, businesses, federal and state governments, and other nonprofits to pursue pragmatic solutions.
The Nature Conservancy has been working in Nebraska since 1971. In that time, TNC has directly invested in 113,179 acres of ecologically precious habitat, home to sandhill cranes, otters, bison, and many threatened or endangered species. Outreach programs provide opportunities for hundreds of students, researchers, and visitors to learn about and enjoy Nebraska landscapes each year. A recent irrigation technology partnership with farmers saved more than a billion gallons of water on the Platte River.
Pay it Forward
The Nature Conservancy’s efforts to meet the critical challenges facing nature today depend on the support of members. Those joining TNC are welcomed into a family of dedicated individuals committed to protecting Nebraska’s lands and waters. TNC hosts regular volunteer workdays on their prairies, where native seed is collected that later becomes habitat. TNC’s website provides ideas on combatting climate change, conserving water, growing native plans, and more.
