PICK OF THE WEEK: Thursday, Nov. 23: It’s that time of year again–time to Shine the Light on Hunger at the Holiday Lights Festival at the Gene Leahy Mall. The celebration starts at 6 p.m., with a free concert to follow at the Holland Performing Arts Center. This holiday performance will feature songstress Camille Metoyer Moten and the Nebraska Wind Symphony. Afterward, make the light shine at the NRG Energy Ice Rink in the Capitol District by dropping off your donations before taking to the ice. To find out more details and how you can help, go here.
Wednesday, Nov. 22: Things can get weird over the holidays. Go with that flow at Laka Lono Rum Club for Daiqs-giving, a celebration that’s sure to fall in line with that weird theme, but at least it’s for a good cause. Bring in a can of food for the Open Door Mission and you’ll get an additional daiquiri with the purchase of one of their tasty, tiki concoctions. Plus, between 7 p.m. and midnight you’ll get to meet a mermaid. Her tail turns back into legs after that though, so be sure to get there on time. To find out more, flip a fin on over here.
Friday, Nov. 24: Put your cooking skills to the test yet again at the Flixx Annual Chili Cookoff this Friday during the Huskers vs. Hawkeyes game. The game starts at 3 p.m. but the doors will open at 2:30 p.m. Your chili will be judged at halftime, when you may be told to sashay away. But if you make the judges tongues pop, you’ll get to stay. Good luck. Find out more here.
Saturday, Nov. 25, to Sunday, Nov. 26: Get in a little art and culture while enjoying some small-town, holiday cheer at the Holiday Open House at Main Street Studios and Gallery in Elkhorn. With treats from three local restaurants, live music, and, of course, a little liquid holiday cheer, this get-together hits all the right notes. Eleven artists will be featured, so there’s bound to be more than enough for you to feast your eyes on. Get all the details here.
Saturday, Nov. 25: Get down with the Lil Joe Acoustic Trio at the Marleybone Tavern this weekend, featuring Little Joe McCarthy, Mike McCracken, and fiddler Carl Orand. If you’re a fan of the Charlie Daniels Band, chances are you’ll love this show. These three dudes serve up some rocking blues, with a little country twang. Speaking of twang, be sure to get there early so you can enjoy dinner and a show thanks to Sauce Bosses BBQ. Food starts at 5 p.m. with the show to follow at 7 p.m. Learn more here.
Sunday, Nov. 26: Check out some of Dom’s favorite things of 2017 at the Waiting Room this Sunday evening with Dominique Morgan & The Experience. If the stellar lineup featuring Tara Vaughan and All Young Girls Are Machine Guns isn’t enough to entice you out, then keep in mind that this show is for a good cause. Lift your spirits and shake away any lingering holiday blues. Get all the deets here.
